History of the revolutionary medical implant
More information

The Exeter Hip is unique among medical implants in terms of excellence and longevity.

It was a revolutionary design when it was invented by a surgeon and an engineer in Exeter 52 years ago, but the results of the hip replacement have proven to be so successful that it is not only the market leader of hip implants, but it continues to grow in popularity around the world.

It is currently implanted into about 130,000 patients a year, and over 2 million people on all continents have benefited from this invention; most patients report a “forgotten hip” and have completely unrestricted activities.

The story from Exeter reads like a fairy-tale – largely of progress, with an occasional disappointment, as the team at the hospital and university, working together, have developed surgical techniques and adapted the implant and proven that it can give brilliant results in all patients of all ages.

Three members of a team that continue to innovate and maintain the Exeter Hip as the international Gold Standard of hip replacements will describe the history, the science, contemporary practice, and a vision of the future for patients.

Speaking on the night will be:

University of Exeter

Dr Tim Holsgrove
Senior Lecturer – Biomechanics & Bioengineering, College of Engineering, Mathematics & Physical Sciences, University of Exeter
